A lot can be determined by a congress of clouds, dapper gentlemen, and rodents. And apparently, the weather in Pennsylvania is much more official than elsewhere.

I love any tradition that includes top hats, so I always tune in to the yearly predictions. Looks like another contentious year! Staten Island Chuck is my favorite because he lives in a log cabin and he proudly bit the mayor in 2009. Always trust a hog with moxie!

i want to go to there

road-trips force something special out of me...the ability to live in the present. this winter weekend, we piled our disheveled selves into the car and headed for the amish market. with 30 minutes to spare, we gorged on cheese, homemade pretzels and a quart of pickles (don't worry, we had a healthy dinner of cheese fries at a college basketball game that night).

the model railroad museum caught our eye on the way home, and we splurged on the train ride + tour. mr. rogers ain't got nothing on this place...land of make-believe, step aside. we have passed this museum dozens of times, but were always put off its sketchy exterior and emphasis on dolls. we took a chance and entered to discover a sweet palace of imaginary worlds. doll exposure was minimal (see tie guy and humpty above: eek!), and pleasantly overshadowed by eight miles of tiny tracks!

we wrapped the evening up with some big east b ball. i followed the mascot more than the game, but the change of scenery was nice.

on the home-front, we kept our new brunch tradition alive. this week, chocolate chip pancakes and crepes! strawberries to "balance" the breakfast.

As part of my live healthier challenge, I have slowly introduced natural beauty products into my routine. Here are some products I find particularly lovely. I know, lotsa dailies, Minegar!

Although natural/organic supplies are a little pricier, I feel good knowing my skin isn't absorbing harsh chemicals. My sensitive skin also feels better as many "regular" skincare lines leave me dry, red, and bumpy.

My goal was to avoid parabens, phthalates, petroleum, sodium lauryl sufate, perfumes, and to introduce natural emollients and antioxidants. I am not sure these products can guarantee all of this, but I feel they are a step in the right direction. I also look for the cruelty free and biodegradable (container) labels.

On how I made the transition:

As I ran out of cleansers, moisturizers, and makeup, I gradually replaced items with natural ones. I did my research (via Sephora customer reviews) and tried to select quality products. An all-at-once overhaul would have been expensive, so I opted for the less overwhelming transition. Gradual product introduction also helped me really assess before/after results. This takes a lot of the guess-work out for sensitive skinned girls who need to identify/isolate possible causes of irritation.

I am still on the prowl for a good natural styling gel (curly) and a good, reasonably priced mascara (in brown/black). Any recommendations?

i read somewhere that granny smith apples and caramelized onions made a fab combo, so we tried it.

we used:

1 yellow onion

1 granny smith apple

butter

english muffins

cheddar

and we:

sliced the apple, onion, and cheese,

toasted the english muffins,

sauteed the onion in butter,

assembled,

then pan-toasted the combo to melt the cheese.

it made 6 halves (3 english muffins)

This weekend I popped some corn, downed a sarsaparilla, and mulled over my last post. My goal was to come up with some solutions to why i buy & keep stuff. I squeaked out some guidelines for myself with the intention of better appreciation for what I have and confidence in my purchases.

CLOTHING

•• Wear or Lose Challenge

Rules: During a given period I must wear selected articles of clothing. If an item is repeatedly avoided or is worn and unloved, it goes to the donate pile. Post-donate panic shopping is prohibited. I hope this clears the clutter, but prevents me from cycling through perfectly good items.

•• The Everyday Test
Rules: Ask myself, "could I wear this everyday if I had to?" If the answer is "eh," it doesn't come home with me. If I already own it and I'm unsure, I will try to remix the item. If it clearly makes me feel frumpy and I don't need it, it goes. My long term goal is to only own clothing that oozes confidence and comfort.

•• Classic Me
Rules: Think about the items that pass the everyday test. Try to identify what is similar about them. Stick to cuts and styles that fit my lifestyle and flatter my body type. Create a "classic me." If I want to branch out into new territory, I will dabble and avoid overhaul shopping.

•• One in One Out

Rules: Before an item comes home, I will select an item that will go. This practice is especially important for areas where I have maxed out. Duplicates are a good place to start.

•• No Duplicates

Rules: This seems easy enough, but then I look at my denim drawer. Dark, light, red, grey, skinny, boot, staight leg....they are all different. My challenge is to find what clothing serves more than one purpose and realize maybe two different pairs of jeans might be more similar (purpose wise) than I thought.

•• Remix Runway
Rules: Try on and remix clothes on a monthly basis. This will help me keep a good inventory of what I have and what has been neglected.

•• Fashion Blog Hiatus
Rules: Steer clear of fashion blogs. Instead of leaving inspired, I leave wanting. I need a break from temptation.

•• No More Browsing

Rules: Only intentional visits to stores. No more browsing trips (that goes for online too).

•• Shop Pretty
Rules: Dr. Zasio recommends wearing confidence boosting clothing when clothes shopping to reduce impulse buys (ie. wear something I feel good in, not my sweats). If I look grungy in the mirror, I am more likely to pity purchase.

FOOD

•• Go Euro

Rules: Plan meals and shop with purpose, but shop twice a week (for three or four meals at a time) so produce doesn't whither and so I don't change my mind by Friday. This will still let me have options, but won't overwhelm me by forcing me to make the week's choices all at once. I hope this reduces the bounty of strays (no-meal-potential foodstuffs).

•• Eat Out Less

Rules: Prepare manageable meals for the work week. Hopefully, the incremental food purchasing habit will be a meal saver in the evenings.

•• Food Traditions

Rules: Start meal traditions like Saturday bruch at home. This will make home-cooked meals something to look forward to.

•• Anti-Freeze

Rules: Stop buying frozen meals for lunch. They are hard to swallow (literally) and I could benefit from a real "pick me up" lunch at midday slump. I need to make time to plan better.

•• Can It

Rules: Gradually incorporate the orphan canned goods into meals until we finish the stockpile. Then, only buy canned goods that are part of a meal.

•• Bee Line

Rules: Stick to the list, even if I am caught in a "shopping hungry" situation. If I need a quick meal, buy the appropriate ingredients and try not to buy car snacks.

•• Step Away From the Aisle

Rules: I will inventory before I leave. This should manage duplicate purchases.

•• extra extra

Rules: Try to avoid left over ingredients/meals. I will check the serving size on cans and opt for smaller cans if I plan to make fewer portions. I will plan my shopping list to account for leftover ingredients and incorporate those ingredients into several meals. I will also halve recipes (although the idea of leftover chili sounds good, I tire of it after the third consecutive day). These tips should help reduce waste.

GIFTS

•• Note to Self

Rules: Make notes of gift ideas as I find items, but avoid purchasing unless it is very near a birthday/holiday. Stockpiling not an option in our tiny apartment.

•• Direct Deliver

Rules: If there is an option to order a gift online, do it. Have it mailed directly to the person (one shipping cost) and send a card along separately. This way the item is properly packaged and it won't collect dust while it waits to be shipped.

•• Re-Gifting is Ok

Rules: When I get a duplicate gift (especially one without a receipt) or a gift that just isn't me, I will have no guilt thoughtfully re-gifting it. I used think to re-gifting was faux pas, but if the unneeded item makes a genuinely nice present for someone else, I see no problem. I'll consider it a saved trip to store. Re-gifting just to unload stuff is a different story.

HOME DECOR

•• Pin Ups

Rules: Pinterst looks/items/ideas instead of purchasing. When I am ready to buy a home, my style will be cultivated.

•• Wait It Out

Rules: Wait to redecorate until our next apartment. We have already made this place cozy, so I will save some design ideas for the next place. I will avoid distracting makeover projects (I have a dissertation to write!) and appreciate all of the great work we have done in this space.

•• Get Shifty

Rules: In the meantime, I will try moving/rearranging frames and books when I need a change of scenery.

BEAUTY PRODUCTS

•• Read All About It

Rules: Read reviews and purchase only when needed. Since I am making the transition to natural/organic beauty products, it is critical I buy wisely....both ingredient and price wise.

•• Bee Line

Rules: Head right to needed product and do not saunter in Sephora. I will put my blinders on at check out counters.

•• Shop Pretty

Rules: Just as when clothes shopping, confidence makes for a wiser shopper. That is not to say I need to load on the makeup before I go out, but if I feel put together, I am less likely to desperately search for miracle products.

•• Stick to What Works

Rules: Product loyalty can save me money because I won't needlessly test run.

DIGITAL STUFF

•• Chip Away

Rules: Each Friday morning I will spend 30 minutes organizing digital files and deleting emails. I will go through pics and delete duplicates, and I will try to take fewer pictures of similar shots from now on. Digital gives me endless options, but I could stand to ease up. I think a little time dealing with all of the digital clutter I am making will cure me of over-photographing!

•• No Time Like the Present

Rules: Start filing system from here on out, and stick to it.

GENERAL

•• Exfoliation Bin

Rules: At the end of each week, I toss un-needed, un-loved, or un-wanted items into a bin in my closet. At the end of the month, I donate the pile.

•• Pretty Things Allowance

Rules: Set aside a small monthly allowance for unplanned for finds, impulse buys, or treats. I am not permitted to go over this budget, but unused funds may roll over and be saved up for a larger purchase. Anything purchased with the PTA will follow the above shopping rules. I will keep tally on my phone.

•• Lust Lists
Rules: I will keep a list of things I really adore. If the feelings pass for an item, I will remove it. If not, it may get added to my wishlist.

If you have ever seen my closet, it is no surprise I enjoy shopping. Sale racks, BOGO, free with purchase= adrenaline overload. But I also savor a good purge. In fact, my donations in the last year could probably clothe a small village. I might even like the clean out better than the hunt, so why do my empty drawers fill up?

I started to think about all of the "needs" that acquiring stuff fulfills in my life. Sometimes the needs are legitimate and other times frivolous (gratuitous wants) or unconscious (autopilot). So I broke my spending down into major categories and took a closer look.

For me it was about discovering some of my collecting habits and examining my relationship with stuff. I analyzed my spending patterns and pondered the reasons I hold onto some things and cycle through others.

general habits:

I have always been a price conscious shopper and I tend to buy items within or below my means. I am not overly sentimental about stuff (this has not always been the case), but I've noticed the desire to be "prepared" precipitates a lot of my acquisition. I tend to come home with items that were not on the list. I have been known to keep clothes I am unhappy with "in case I change my mind." I am often indecisive and I over think simple things.

initial diagnosis:
I am not a compulsive spender but I am insistent on having "options." I try to purchase with intention, but I can't always resist shiny things. ...but let me break it down.

What this exercise reveals to me is that I follow purchasing and retaining scripts. Needs, loves and wants are commonly involved in my decision process, but unconscious cues drive my habits as well. I guess think about stuff a lot more than I realize.

on panic purchasing

Although I have good intentions, I worry I will make the wrong decision and regret it. In the scheme of things though, the choice (and outcome) is usually pretty insignificant. And too much at once makes it impossible to really enjoy any individual item anyway. Gathering becomes a mere goal to achieve instead of an opportunity to appreciate deliberate purchases. I need to give myself time to enjoy things before moving on to the next conquest/wishlist.

on justifications for keeping

I keep things for many reasons, but it seems like guilt, the need to feel prepared, and indecision are a few prime culprits. Indecision is the most stressful because it causes me to put things off for later. Though I am always hopeful/motivated about the future, I need to make choices in the present and stop projecting unrealistic goals ahead of myself.

on guilty purging

I am often at conflict with stuff because I idealize two disparate values at the same time: I want to streamline AND I want to enjoy my things. Here is where guilt divides me. There are some things I own that I never use and I don't particularly like--keeping those items incites guilt. There are also things that I love and use but their volume conflicts with the streamline desire---keeping those items also incites guilt. Tossing things I love and use (especially things that haven't cause financial, emotional, or physical strain) seems wasteful. Guilty purging often pushes me into emotional bing shopping. I feel compelled to fill a void.

on reframing
Surely my conflict can be resolved, and I suspect it is just a matter of practicing new habits and allowing myself to slip up on occasion without harsh recourse. My problem has been mistaking the thing (or the lack of the thing) for the change.....because it is a tangible representation. If I dress this way, I am now this person. If I get rid of those things, I no longer like to shop. If I decorate my space, apartment living will be fulfilling. My relationship with stuff may also be indicative of greater tendencies and insecurities.

While I was working on this entry, I discovered Dr. Robin Zasio's The Hoarder in You and downloaded it. Her book examines the hunter-gatherer tendencies in all of us, and explores how these tendencies impact our lives. She takes an honest look at human relationships with stuff (clutter in particular). Her chapter on acquiring (ch 6) made me recognize some of the shopping traps I fall into.

This year began on a high note, so I jumped in with without abandon. I reignited my power walking routine and changed my approach to snacking. For me, this meant drastically reducing my processed sugar intake and doubling up on fruits and veges (I was tired of being a breaditarian). The winter blues tried to nip me, but I stayed active, dabbling in DIY and photo projects, baking treats to share, and getting outdoors every chance I could.

This year has also been about challenges.

In February, I got a great start on my prospectus and by late March I had my committee assembled. It was pretty grueling and there were a few hiccups, but in the end I eagerly dove face first into what had been a daunting prospect. I am still working to manage school related anxiety, but I am no longer paralyzed.

I also made a conscious effort to reevaluate my shopping habits (something I've been tackling since my first wad of babysitting cash). This has helped me identify some of the motivating factors behind my spending and acquiring patterns. I even sorted out some of my digital hoarding (inbox:1628 unread emails) and passive grocery shopping tendencies.

Then there were the little things...the little huge things: flossing, up-ticking the water intake, switching to natural beauty products, and adequate sleep.

And my most generic, but perhaps most beneficial effort, was my attempt at positive reframing. I tried not to let my inner perfectionist tell me I was inadequate.

when my dad was eight or nine he and his cousin spent hours belly laughing at a poster depicting two kittens holding telephone receivers. the absurdity of the image combined with the goofy elation of boyhood bonding made a lasting impression on him. i giggle just hearing him tell the story.

these pony erasers are my "cat on the telephone." i die just looking at them.

these delicate desk supplies where purchased for my husband's Christmas stocking. though they are highly impractical, the clumsy pokey-esque-ness drew me in. and hey, the whole pack cost 99 cents. total steal! they have detachable saddles, manes, and tails! what more could i ask for?

i may or may not have spent 30 minutes posing and photographing them. ha!

I always loved sledding as a kid, but dreaded being sweaty under my coat while my extremities were frostbitten. Winter sporting gear has come a long way since my days on the inner tube.

This season, I am trying to continue my power walking streak even as the temps drop. I usually call it quits as soon as we hit the low 50s. I play wii fit for about six days. Then I head for the holiday cookies only to return to the great outdoors for an occasional snow hike.

Today it was 40 and I managed a good power walk. (note: I loathe cold weather more than any living human).

Here's what got me through:

Headgear
moisture wicking neck warmer (boys dept Target)
under armor wicking ear band (Dick's Sporting Goods)-must have
wicking pony tail cap (Target)-see the pony tail fly?

Today I only sported the ear band, but in colder weather I layer a hat with the ear band.

I try to select versatile/"worst-case-scenario" coats: zipper pockets are great for keys, ipod, and phone; thumb holes keep hands warm, but don't have to be utilized; high neck line and hood are helpful for unexpected wind or precipitation. I always feel prepared with this jacket.

I have a rule when I start a new regimen...I have to earn the gear. Once I have shown commitment to an activity, I begin to accumulate the clothing. Since we started snow hiking trips last winter, I already had hats, long underwear, gloves, and a neck warmer. I also already had cross trainers, athletic pants and a running jacket (for spring weather). Although I am serious about my routine, I do not need expensive gear. My shoes are my only real investment. For the other stuff, I primarily shop Marshall/TJ Maxx and Target.

I have found that black clothing is perfect for the winter as it absorbs heat nicely. This works better as a daytime color though (make sure you are reflective at night). Zippers are a must too. As a power walker, I start out chilly and gradually warm up. Mid-walk I need to open vents and cool off my core. I also prefer moisture wicking materials, and this technology is available at various price points.

soft pretzels

A. made these homemade pretzels during Octsnowber weekend. Delish! We didn't have the parchment-lined sheet, but were still successful. Next round, we'll try at 8 minutes (for a teensy bit softer pretzel) and sweeten the dough a little. We're aspiring to be the next Auntie Annes.

*Recipe taken from The Boot

The Mall Pretzels (makes 6)
adapted from Jeannie Yee

¾ cup warm water (110°F)
1 ¼ tsp of active dry yeast (half of a .25 ounce package)
1 tbsp brown sugar
½ tsp salt
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup warm water (110°F)
2 tbsp baking soda (for soaking)
½ tbsp butter, melted
coarse kosher salt (or pretzel salt)
mustard, for dipping (optional)

Pour ¾ cup warm water into a mixing bowl. Dissolve yeast, brown sugar, and salt into the water. Stir in flour. When mixture comes together, dump onto a floured surface. Knead dough about 8 minutes, until smooth. Pour a few drops of olive oil into mixing bowl; place dough in and turn to coat surface. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.

When dough is ready, cut into 6 pieces. Roll each into ½ inch thick ropes. Shape pretzels by forming a U, then twisting ends and flipping over onto itself, gently pressing overlapping dough to seal. Let rise for 15 minutes.

Fill a bowl with 1 cup warm water. Add baking soda and stir. Soak each pretzel for 30 seconds, flipping over halfway through if not fully submerged. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle coarse salt over top. (If you prefer sweet pretzels, use cinnamon sugar instead of salt.) Bake at 450°F for 10-15 minutes, until golden brown. For an extra buttery flavor, brush on a little more melted butter when the pretzels come out of the oven.

when i'm super involved in a project, feeling finicky or burned out on available choices, urphy or nervous, in a hurry, or frustrated.

this is why i am thankful for nutritious drinks, juices, and smoothies.

Although we have not been asked to evacuate this far inland, I have just been informed by my employer that emergency closing procedures are in place for Sunday and Monday and that those on leave (me) will be called in as essential personnel if needed.

I got this news during my walk and it killed the solemnity of my stress-free ritual. Even though I doubt we'll suffer any major storm damage, I gaped at mowed lawns and standing trees like it was the last time I'd enjoy them. Eerie feeling.

Summer Shirt-Like Objects

The difficulty I experience when folding my wife's clothes stems from two major differences between her clothing and mine. The first and most obvious (a difference I have expressed to her on occasion during team-folding sessions) is the miniature size of every article she owns. Although I am approximately 65% larger than my wife in total body mass, her clothes are, on average, 800% smaller than my male-equivalent items. If I try to utilize the folding method I use on my own t-shirts, the result is a sadly folded girl t about the width of a bookmark. Attempting to fold other items, specifically panties, is nearly futile! It's like folding a leaf of lettuce (romaine); almost too miniature of an action for my hands to comprehend.

While I may eventually get the hang of micro-folding (it takes longer than 5 years of marriage to fully hone those skills evidently), the second difference is one that is more subjective and less likely to ever be fully understood: categories. I've noticed that my wife seems to have the following categories of summer shirt-like objects:
t-shirts
tank tops
sport tank tops
fancy tankish t-shirts
Here are her actual categories (from her perspective, it's very simple):
t-shirts
fun t-shirts
pajama t-shirts (ratty t-shirts)
tank tops
athletic tops
under shirts
You know, I had initially felt that some of those t-shirts were almost too fun to go with the rest, but I wasn't sure. Next time... next time.
